The beginning of Nephrology in the West Zone started first in Maharastra with establishment of Nephrology Units at The King Edward VII memorial Hospital, Mumbai (1963) followed by establishment in Pune (1969) by Dr.F.F.Wadia. In 1970s, “Bombay Nephrology Group” an academic and clinical body was set up following establishment of additional units - Jaslok Hospital (1972), Bombay Hospital (1974), Bhatia, Nanavati & Breach Candy Hospital (1975), Harkisondas Hospital (1976). Dr.M.K.Mani (Jaslok) and Dr. V.N. Acharya (KEM hospital) Mumbai who formed this group in 1973 started meeting regularly to discuss interesting & problematic material under their care. Thereafter, other cities (Pune, Miraj) in Maharashtra and other states in west zone joined and the chapter had its first meeting at very scenic place at Alibag near Mumbai harbour in 1984.
Over the years the chapter has grown with more and more nephrology units opening in all the states of west zone which now include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh).
West Zone can take the credit for starting the transplant programme in India. Attempts at Clinical Transplantation (kidney & Heart ) began in the modern era by efforts of Dr.P.K.Sen and Dr.D.K.Karanjawala and their team at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. The first ever Kidney Transplant was done by this team where our mother of nephrology Dr. V. N. Acharya was the team Nephrologist In May 1965. This was a cadaver transplant. This was followed by second cadaver donor transplant in April 1966. This created a furor in the medical profession and in the society in general. Thereafter there was period of lull till 1972 when live related donor transplant programme were started in Mumbai followed by several other cities in West Zone.
Establishment of Indian Society of Organ Transplantation was yet another milestone achieved in the west zone by pioneering efforts of Dr.H.L.Trivedi of Amadabad in 1987. Thereafter, Dr.Trivedi has also established independent Institute of Organ Transplantation and has been doing lot of original work to induce tolerance in the recipient.
Besides building nephrology training program, Dr. Acharya worked hard to develop training program for other renal health care workers like nutritionists, dialysis & lab technicians, transplant co-ordinators and other social workers. With all her zeal she inspired her students Dr. Bharat Shah and Dr. Umesh Khanna and organized the first COnference of REnal health care Professionals (COREP) in 2012. The conference was a huge success and highly acclaimed by International Federation of Kidney foundation.
Yet another feather in the cap of West Zone has being starting of CKD registry of ISN at Nadiad under the chairman ship of Dr.M.M.Rajapurkar. This registry yielded very valuable information.
ISN west zone continues to grow with more and more nephrology units coming up in all the parts of west zone. These centers have been able to provide state-of-the-art nephrology care.
